A career as a loan originator is one of the last professions remaining that you can enter with very little money out of pocket and which can result in unlimited income potential. In the mortgage business, a mortgage loan originator is the person who gets the loan. There's a big difference between a loan officer and a loan originator.
A loan officer typically sits behind a desk and waits for customers to walk in off the street and apply for a loan. A loan originator is out on the street looking for people who want to apply for a loan. Which is better? Well let's take a look at the following scenario. John has been thinking about re-financing his home loan in order to take advantage of the low interest rates that are now available. John works a typical 9am-5pm job. Banks usually close well before he gets out of work and the one hour lunch break is unfortunately not enough time to apply for a loan. John is forced to delay his decision to re-finance because of the conflicting schedules between the bank hours and his work hours. Fortunately for John, as he is reading the local newspaper, he finds an advertisement placed by Paul who works as a loan originator for ABC Mortgage. Paul is not tied to a desk from 9am-5pm. Paul advertises the fact that he can meet with people at a time that is convenient for them. John calls Paul and they schedule to meet at John's home at 6pm. Paul could have easily met with John at a coffee shop during his lunch break or even over the weekend and start the process of qualifying for a loan.
But to be successful you must get the proper loan origination training. There are hundreds if not thousands of books and training materials to help you become a loan originator. The key is finding the right loan originator training that will work for you! Fortunately, many mortgage brokers hire and train inexperienced but eager to learn individuals and teach them how to become succesful loan originators.
